For Synagogue Committees: Synagogues which own historic buildings (some of which date from mid twentieth century!) can call on me to learn more about the architectural, social meaning of their buildings. I have found, too, that synagogues that are currently working with an architect sometimes have a hard time communicating the importance of the design to the congregation. While the architect usually does a noble job in explaining his/her project, sometimes it is valuable to bring in an independent scholar. That is where I come in. I can talk to the congregation about the worthiness of an architect and about the positive, innovative aspects of a particular design. |
